Maths Challenge 2015. We sent four students to Bishop Barrington to compete in a Primary Maths Challenge.
Four children from Class 6 attended a Maths Challenge at Bishop Barrington school on Tuesday 10th November. They were competing against 8 other primary schools from around the county and had to complete challenges including logic problems, pentominoes and a maths relay. Everyone enjoyed the day, with comments of ‘good fun’ and ‘amazing’. The children were a credit to the school, in both their sportsmanship and behaviour, and came a well-deserved 2nd place. This means we will go through to the county final later in the year. A big thank you to the children for their exemplary effort and to Bishop Barrington school for organising the event.

The Barnes (Durham Police Dog Support Unit) October 2015
In order to complete our Neighbourhood Watch Project we went on a trip to the Barnes in Spennymoor to visit the Police Dogs. “Awwww!” we exclaimed – they were all very cute, especially Dexter the sniffer dog! He quickly found things in the room using his amazing sense of smell. Finally, we saw Jet and Ben before we left which was great.

In our Mayfly Project we discovered a variety of creatures, such as the stone clinger and the freshwater shrimp. Altogether in my group, we collected 14 shrimp and 2 mayflies. Surprisingly, one of our mayfly larvae hatched in front of us – it was an amazing sight! We all enjoyed our trip to study the river and Lucy from Rivers Trust is going to continue using us to help her study the river throughout the year.

Reception children, staff and families had a fantastic afternoon building dens on the school field. the children and families worked together to make interesting dens out of old sheets, rope, pegs, sticks and clothes horses. We finished the afternoon with toasted marshmallows and hot chocolate around a real campfire!
Mrs Norman judged the dens and awarded a box of chocolates to Reece Robinson and his mum, with a little help from Kye McCaskill too. Well done.
It was lovely to see so many parents and carers join the event. Here are some of their feedback comments:
Faye’s family said, “Me, my mam and Faye enjoyed the afternoon. I was just saying it would be nice if we had another afternoon like it!”
Jack’s family said, “It was a lovely day and great fun!”
And Reece’s mum said,” Such a fantastic afternoon. The boys were fab….thanks for having us!”

Looking ahead to November 2015 I would like to inform you that we will once again be producing a St. Andrew’s Calendar – as we did last year.
Last year this was a project that we took on ourselves as a school working with families to take photographs of the local area, producing what I have to say was a calendar of outstanding quality, with some stunning photographs taken by the children, showing that Bishop Auckland has many hidden gems and is a truly beautiful place to live.
As the year 2015 draws to a close we want to make another calendar for 2016, this time focusing on wildlife in the Bishop Auckland area. We want you to get snapping with those cameras and to email your photographs to our school email address standrews@durhamlearning.net to be judged for a competition.
The twelve winning photographers will each receive a £20 voucher prize and have their photographs printed in the calendar which will go on sale just before Christmas. Closing date for receipt of photographs is Friday 14th November; plenty time to get out there spotting animals and plants to be included.
